Overview
Balconia is a light two-player tactical game published by Ares Games (designed by Red Cat Games) in which players build an apartment complex block by block, filling a 5x5 grid. Each turn, one player selects a building block and chooses which two sides are available, while the other player picks one of those sides and places it. Players score points based on the balconies and elements facing their side of the building.
Components
- 15 Building blocks (each with 4 decorated sides representing balcony elements)
- 1 Building frame (5x5 grid)
- Scoring aids
- Rules booklet
Setup
- Place the building frame between the two players, one on each side.
- Shuffle or randomly arrange the 15 building blocks face-down.
- Determine who goes first (the “Chooser” for the first turn).
Turn Structure
Each turn involves two roles: the Chooser and the Placer.
- The Chooser reveals a building block.
- The Chooser selects which two adjacent sides of the block will be the scoring sides (one facing each player).
- The Placer picks one of those two orientations and places the block in the grid, adjacent to previously placed blocks.
- Roles alternate each turn.
Actions
- Choose orientation: The Chooser decides which two adjacent sides of the block are offered, giving one potentially better side to the opponent while keeping a desired side for themselves.
- Place block: The Placer selects their preferred orientation from the two offered and places the block into a legal position in the 5x5 grid.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
The game ends when all 15 blocks have been placed in the grid (filling the 5x5 frame, minus the center or corners depending on the specific edition).
Each player tallies points for the balcony elements on their side of the building. Points are awarded based on the specific elements showing on the blocks facing the player, including:
- Matching element types in rows or columns
- Special scoring conditions for certain element combinations
- Bonuses for completing rows with harmonious designs
The player with the highest total score wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Role alternation: Players swap Chooser and Placer roles each turn, ensuring both players get equal turns in each role.
- Placement adjacency: Each block must be placed adjacent to at least one previously placed block (except the first block).
- Orientation is locked: Once placed, a block cannot be rotated or moved.
- Strategic tension: The Chooser must decide what to offer knowing the Placer gets to pick the final orientation. This creates a “you cut, I choose” dynamic.
