Overview
Baden-Württemberg Catan is a special regional edition of Settlers of Catan set on a fixed map of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Instead of the standard Robber, the game features a Scientist, and “most researchers” replaces “largest army.” Players can build famous Baden-Württemberg landmarks such as the Freiburg Cathedral, Mergentheim Palace, Stuttgart TV Tower, Ulm Cathedral, Constance Harbor’s Imperia, and Heidelberg Castle. Standard Catan rules apply with regional modifications.
Components
- Fixed game board depicting Baden-Württemberg
- Resource cards (brick, lumber, ore, grain, wool)
- Development cards (replaced with Research cards)
- Landmark tiles (6 famous structures)
- Scientist figure (replaces Robber)
- Building pieces (settlements, cities, roads) per player
- Dice (2D6)
- Rules booklet
Setup
- Place the fixed Baden-Württemberg map board.
- Place number tokens on hexes as printed on the board (fixed positions).
- Each player takes building pieces in their color.
- Players place initial settlements on fixed building spots (distance rule does NOT apply in this edition).
- Place the Scientist on the desert hex.
- Shuffle and prepare the Research card deck.
Turn Structure
Same as standard Catan:
- Roll Dice: Roll 2D6 to determine which hexes produce resources.
- Trade: Trade resources with other players or the bank (4:1, or better with ports).
- Build: Spend resources to build roads, settlements, cities, or landmarks, or buy Research cards.
Actions
- Build Road: 1 Brick + 1 Lumber. Place between two adjacent intersections.
- Build Settlement: 1 Brick + 1 Lumber + 1 Grain + 1 Wool. Place on an intersection.
- Upgrade to City: 2 Grain + 3 Ore. Replace a settlement with a city.
- Build Landmark: Costs 2 fewer resources than upgrading to a city. Landmarks provide special bonuses (resources, cards, or additional roads) and count as cities for scoring.
- Buy Research Card: 1 Ore + 1 Grain + 1 Wool. Draw from the Research deck.
- Move the Scientist: When a 7 is rolled, move the Scientist to any hex. The Scientist blocks production from that hex. Players with more than 7 cards must discard half.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
First player to reach 10 victory points wins:
- Settlement: 1 VP
- City: 2 VP
- Landmark: 2 VP (with additional special bonuses)
- Longest Road: 2 VP
- Most Researchers: 2 VP (replaces Largest Army)
- Certain Research cards may provide VP
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- No distance rule: Unlike standard Catan, the distance rule for building does not apply. Fixed building spots are pre-determined on the map.
- Scientist replaces Robber: Functions identically to the Robber but is thematically a Scientist.
- Most Researchers replaces Largest Army: Playing 3+ Research (Knight-equivalent) cards earns this bonus.
- Landmarks: Six unique structures that cost less than city upgrades and provide ongoing bonuses. Each landmark can only be built once.
- Fixed map: The board is always the same, unlike standard Catan’s randomized hex placement.
- Fixed building spots: Cities and landmarks can only be built on specific designated intersections.
