Overview
Ausbrecher AG is a betting and racing game for 2-6 players in which prisoners race to escape the island prison of Monte Ganovo by reaching their boats. Players secretly predict the finishing order and then try to influence the race so that their predictions come true. With 7 prisoners and 5,400 possible finishing orders, each game unfolds differently.
Components
- 1 Game board showing the island prison with race tracks to boats
- 7 Prisoner pawns
- Prediction cards/sheets for each player
- Movement cards or dice
- Rules booklet
Setup
- Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Place all 7 prisoner pawns at the starting position on the island.
- Each player receives prediction cards/materials.
- Each player secretly writes down their predicted order of which prisoners will reach their boats first, second, third, etc.
Turn Structure
On each turn, players play cards or roll dice to move prisoner pawns along the track toward the boats. The specifics of movement depend on the card or die result.
Actions
- Move a prisoner: Advance one of the 7 prisoner pawns along its track toward the boats.
- Influence the race: Use cards strategically to speed up or slow down specific prisoners to match your predictions.
- Predict: At the start of the game, record your secret prediction of the finishing order.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
After all prisoners have reached their boats (or the game otherwise ends), players reveal their predictions. Players score points based on how accurately their predictions matched the actual finishing order:
- The more correctly predicted positions, the more points scored.
- Exact matches in specific positions score the most.
The player with the most points from correct predictions wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- All 7 prisoners race: Even though players don’t “own” specific prisoners, they try to influence the outcome to match their predictions.
- 5,400 possible orders: With 7 prisoners, there are 7! / some factor = 5,400 different possible finishing sequences.
- Secret predictions: Predictions are hidden until the end of the game, creating suspense and bluffing opportunities.
- Multiple players influencing the same prisoner: Since all players can move any prisoner, the race becomes a tug-of-war of competing interests.
