Overview
Antike Duellum is a 2-player civilization strategy game using the rondel mechanism. Players lead ancient empires (Carthaginians vs Romans, or Greeks vs Persians) competing for military and cultural supremacy. Players produce resources, found cities, build temples and town walls, recruit military units, develop technologies, and maneuver forces. The first player to collect 9 ancient personages wins. Event cards add variability and asymmetry to each game.
Components
- 1 double-sided game board (Carthaginians vs Romans / Greeks vs Persians)
- 74 wooden pieces: 24 galleys (12 per color), 24 legions (12 per color), 2 game markers, 12 wooden disks (6 per color), 12 white temples
- 34 city tokens (10 gold, 12 marble, 12 iron) – reversible to show either player’s color
- 12 town walls
- Resource chips: marble (white), iron (blue), gold (yellow) in 1, 2, and 5 denominations
- Coins
- 54 cards: 21 personage cards, 25 event cards, 2 blank event cards, 6 short rules cards
Setup
- Each player receives wooden pieces of their color: 12 galleys, 12 legions, 1 octagonal game stone, 6 wooden disks, and 1 town wall.
- Place 1 disk at zero on the VP track. Place 1 legion and 1 galley in each recruitment box.
- Mark 3 starting cities with city tokens (1 gold, 1 marble, 1 iron).
- Each player receives 3 marble, 3 iron, and 3 gold chips as starting supply.
- Choose starting player randomly; the other player receives 1 coin as compensation.
- Sort 21 personage cards into 5 stacks. Set up bank with resources, coins, temples, town walls, city tokens.
- Shuffle 25 event cards; draw 3 for an open display.
Turn Structure
Players alternate turns. Each turn has 3 steps:
- Action Selection (Rondel): Place game stone on the rondel. First turn: free choice. Subsequent turns: move clockwise 1-3 wedges free; each additional wedge costs 1 resource or coin. Cannot stay on same wedge two turns in a row (repeating = 8 wedges = 5 resources).
- Found Cities (optional): Found cities in regions with at least 1 of your military units. Cost: 1 marble + 1 iron + 1 gold per city, plus 1 coin per adjacent city producing the same resource.
- Win Personages: Collect earned personages. For each personage gained, opponent draws 1 event card from the open display.

- Phase 2 – Conquest: City defense = 1 (3 with temple) + town wall bonus (+1) + Res Publica (+1) + defenders in region. Attacker needs units >= defense to conquer.
Know-Hows: Technology advances purchased with gold, providing benefits like extended movement, increased production, and improved defense.
Town Walls: Provide +1 defense to a city. Players receive additional town walls at VP track milestones (0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 personages).
Event Cards: When opponent gains a personage, you draw event cards as compensation. Event cards have various effects (earthquakes destroying walls, burglary stealing coins, academy granting gold, etc.).
