Overview
Amun-Re is an auction and area-influence game set in ancient Egypt. Players are leaders of Egyptian dynasties acquiring provinces, building pyramids, and farming along the Nile. The game spans two eras (Old Kingdom and New Kingdom), each ending with a scoring round. Players bid for provinces, invest in agriculture, and construct pyramids to earn victory points. The wealthiest dynasty after both eras wins.
Components
- 1 Game board (map of Egypt with 15 provinces, scoring track, temple of Amun-Re)
- 15 Province cards
- Money cards in denominations 1, 2, 5, 10, 20
- Building stones (pyramids) in 3 sizes
- Power cards
- Farmer tokens
- Sacrifice track markers
- Player markers
Setup
- Place the game board centrally.
- Separate province cards into two groups matching the two kingdom eras.
- Give each player starting money and player markers.
- Prepare the power card deck.
Turn Structure
Each era consists of 3 rounds. Each round has the following phases:
- Province Cards: Reveal province cards equal to the number of players.
- Auction Phase: Players bid on provinces using an ascending auction.
- Action Phase: Players use their acquired provinces – buying power cards, placing farmers, and building pyramids.
- Sacrifice to Amun-Re: Players secretly commit money to the temple.
- Harvest: Based on total sacrifices, the Nile floods (or not), affecting farmers’ yields.
- Scoring (end of era only): Score points for provinces, pyramids, sets, and majorities.
Actions
Auction
- Province cards are laid out. Players take turns placing bid markers on provinces.
- Bids follow specific rules: you must either bid higher on a province than the current bid or place your marker on an unclaimed province.
- If outbid, your marker is returned and you must bid elsewhere on a future turn.
- Once all players have won a province, they pay their bid.
Actions in Provinces
After winning provinces, players may:
- Buy Power Cards: Spend money for cards that provide special abilities.
- Place Farmers: Add farmer tokens to provinces to generate income during harvest.
- Build Pyramids: Spend money to place pyramid building stones in provinces.
Sacrifice to Amun-Re
All players secretly select money to sacrifice. Reveal simultaneously. The total determines the Nile flood level:
- Higher total = more flooding = more income from farmers
- Lower total = drought = less income
The player who sacrificed the most receives a bonus (free power card, extra building stone, etc.). The player who sacrificed the least (or nothing) may get a penalty.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Scoring occurs at the end of each era (after 3 rounds):
- Province Pyramids: Points for the most pyramids in each province.
- Pyramid Majorities: Points for having the most pyramids on each side of the Nile.
- Set Collection: Points for controlling provinces with matching symbols.
- Temple Offerings: Bonus points based on position on the sacrifice track.
After the 2nd era scoring, the player with the most victory points wins.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- Provinces acquired in the Old Kingdom are lost and re-auctioned in the New Kingdom, but pyramids remain on the board.
- Power cards have various effects: extra money, free farmers, construction bonuses, and scoring bonuses.
- If tied for sacrifice amount, the first player in turn order breaks the tie.
- Money paid in auctions goes to the bank, not to other players.
- Players must bid at least 0 (free) but cannot voluntarily withdraw from the auction until they win a province.
