Akron is a three-dimensional abstract connection game for two players. Players place or move marbles on an 8x8 board, attempting to form a connected chain of their color linking their two opposite edges of the board. The game features a unique “cascade” mechanic where marbles can be stacked on top of others and may drop when supports are removed, creating dynamic chain reactions.
The board starts completely empty. One player takes Black marbles, the other takes White. Players are each assigned two opposite edges of the board as their connection targets. Black plays first.
Players alternate turns. On each turn, a player must perform exactly one of two actions: place a new marble or move an existing marble.
Take a marble from your supply and place it in any empty hole at board level (the ground floor of the grid).
Move one of your existing marbles on the board to a new valid position. The destination must be an empty spot that touches (is adjacent to) any marble that was connected to the moving marble before the move. A marble may step up or down one or more levels per move.
A marble can rest on top of four orthogonally adjacent marbles of either color that form a 2x2 square. Marbles may be stacked to build upward. If a supporting marble is moved and it supports exactly one marble above it, the upper marble drops down, potentially triggering a cascade of further drops.
Marbles connect in two ways:
When connections cross at different levels, the uppermost connection takes precedence; the lower connection is considered cut until the upper one is removed.
A player wins by forming a connected chain of their marbles linking their two assigned opposite edges of the board. Crucially, the winning chain must still exist after the opponent’s next move — if the opponent can break the chain on their turn, the connection does not count as a win.
Turn: Place 1 marble at board level OR Move 1 existing marble
Win Condition: Connect your two opposite edges with a chain of your marbles (must survive opponent’s reply)
Key Mechanic: Stacking on 2x2 supports + cascade drops when supports are removed
