Advance to Boardwalk
Overview
Players compete to become the richest builder on the boardwalk by constructing hotel units on properties within color zones. The value of the dice determines how much you can spend building, and the color die determines where. Your token’s position on the boardwalk reflects the total value of all properties you own. The first player to run out of hotel units or reach the last space on the boardwalk triggers the end of the game.
Components
- 1 Gameboard (boardwalk with color zones and property values)
- 80 Hotel units (20 of each color)
- 3 Dice: 2 standard numbered dice + 1 color die (4 colors, “W” for Wild, “F” for Fortune)
- 4 Tokens: baby buggy, roller skate, sailboat, moped
- 28 Fortune cards
- 20 Property cards
Setup
- Place the gameboard in the center.
- Sort property cards by color and place opposite their matching color zone and value on the board.
- Shuffle Fortune cards face down on the Fortune Card Draw Pile space.
- Each player chooses a token and places it on START.
- Distribute hotel units by player count:
- 4 players: 14 units each
- 3 players: 16 units each
- 2 players: 20 units each
- Each player draws 2 Fortune cards (keep hidden).
- Roll numbered dice to determine first player (highest goes first). Play passes left.
Turn Structure
On your turn, perform these steps in order:
- Roll all 3 dice (2 numbered + 1 color die)
- Build unit(s) if possible (or draw Fortune card if “F” rolled)
- Take property card(s) if you became a new owner
- Move tokens (yours forward, opponents’ backward if ownership changed)
- Play a Fortune card (optional, at end of turn)
- End turn by passing dice to the left
Actions
Rolling the Dice
- Numbered dice: Sum determines your building budget in millions of dollars.
- Color die results:
- Color (4 sides): Must build in that color zone.
- “W” (Wild): Choose any color zone to build in.
- “F” (Fortune): Disregard numbered dice. Draw 1 Fortune card. May play a Fortune card this turn, then end turn.
Building
Place your hotel units on properties within the rolled color zone whose total values equal or are less than your dice sum.
Building Conditions:
- You can only build one unit on any vacant property per turn.
- You may build more than one unit on an already-occupied property.
- You may build on top of an opponent’s units.
- You may build on properties worth less than the dice total (no change given).
- You must build at least one unit unless you rolled “F”.
Taking Property Cards
You become a property owner by:
- Building on a vacant lot.
- Building more units on a property than the current owner has.
When you become owner, immediately take the matching property card (from the board or from the previous owner).
Tie for ownership: If two or more players have equal units on a property, the player whose unit is closest to the bottom of the stack is the owner.
Moving Tokens
Your token position must always equal the total value of your property cards.
- Gain a property: move forward by that property’s value.
- Lose a property: move backward by that property’s value.
- You must also move opponents’ tokens when their ownership changes.
Landing on “F” space: If your token lands on an “F” space by moving forward on your turn, draw 1 Fortune card as a bonus.
Fortune Cards
- Keep cards face down in front of you.
- Play one Fortune card at the end of your turn.
- Some Fortune cards must be played immediately after rolling (as indicated on the card).
- Played cards go to the Fortune Card Discard Pile.
- When the draw pile is empty, shuffle the discard pile to form a new draw pile.
- “If your token is in last place” applies if you are tied for last.
Scoring / Victory Conditions
Game End
The game ends when:
- A player has no hotel units left to build at the start of their turn, OR
- A player’s token reaches the last space on the boardwalk.
Winning
The player controlling the most millions of dollars worth of property (as shown by token position on the boardwalk) wins. Tiebreaker: most properties owned.
Special Rules & Edge Cases
- If you roll a number and color zone with no corresponding property available, you have no play to make (but may still play a Fortune card).
- Building on top of opponents’ units is a key tactic for taking their properties.
- When gaining properties via Fortune cards, remember to adjust both property cards and all affected tokens.
- You cannot split building across multiple color zones in a single turn (unless a Fortune card allows it).
